Originally on ABC (30 mins) Status: Ended Premiered February 1, 1991 Thirteen Treasures of ancient time, Thirteen lessons of Rule in rhyme. To find the jewels in secret places, Follow where the Compass faces. If returned from the shore beyond, A new day dawns for Octopon. But if they fall into evil hands, Darkness descends on all the lands. For these riches two shall vie, In the realm of Dark Water where the Treasures lie. When Ren, a young lighthouse keeper, rescues a stranger foundering in the rocks near his home, he learns the man was his father, the former king of Octopon. Ren is given a magic crystal Compass that guides him to the Thirteen Treasures of Rule. Unfortunately, the evil pirate captain Bloth is also aware of the Treasures and is relentless in pursuing Ren to get them. On his side, Ren soon acquires companions like Ioz the pirate, Tula the Ecomancer, and Niddler the fussy monkey-bird. His quest becomes all the more urgent when Ren learns that the Dark Water, a carnivorous black liquid that consumes anything it snares, threatens to envelop and destroy his world, and only the Treasures he seeks can stop it. The Pirates of Dark Water was one of a scant few American animated series to feature an ongoing epic storyline, serious themes, and an occasionally dark tone: Lesser characters could actually die during the course of an episode, something unheard of for Saturday morning TV. The show also cleverly allowed its cast of sailors to swear, using made-up curse words so as not to incur the wrath of network censors. Some of those words are, "Noy jitat!" and "Chongo-longo!" and "Scut pango!" Other touches that made the show unique were a central villain (Bloth) who was able to remain evil and menacing despite the good guys always winning, and a sexist character (Ioz) who didn't neatly "learn his lesson" by the end of the episode. (You'd never get away with that in these politically correct days.) The show started out in 1991 as a five-part miniseries simply titled "Dark Water". Later that year, eight additional episodes were aired. The ratings weren't high, but the producers fought as valiantly as Ren himself to keep the series afloat, and eight more episodes were produced for 1992/1993. After that, the series was cancelled, leaving the adventure unfinished... but not forgotten. ("Always the Quest!")
